Roman museum

Step back in time to ancient Vienna with the Roman Museum on Hohen Markt, where state-of-the-art technology offers a captivating insight into the daily life of the former Roman Legion camp and the neighboring civil city, "Vindobona."

The remnants of Roman times in Vienna, such as the ruins of Tribune houses from the Legion camp and 300 fascinating archaeological discoveries, unfold the entire spectrum of Roman life in the second and third centuries. Visitors can marvel at everyday and religious objects, building fragments, figurines, toys, canal covers, pottery, divine statues, and curiosities. Using the latest 3-D technologies, graphics, and wall paintings, the museum brings to life a vivid representation of how it might have looked back then.

Founded in 97 AD to secure the northern border of the Empire, the Legion camp thrived during Vindobona's peak, with over 30,000 people living in the area of the present-day city—a diverse mix of locals and immigrants from all corners of the Roman Empire. As the exhibition shows, daily life was surprisingly comfortable, featuring covered sidewalks, sanitation systems, water supply, taverns, baths, theaters, and shops.

To enhance the experience further, a groundbreaking video guide informs visitors not only in German and English but also in sign language. Children can immerse themselves in the ancient Roman life through special play stations and 3-D puzzles, making the documentation even more engaging and interactive.
