Description

The Klöckeln tradition is an old Advent custom that was once widespread throughout the Alpine region. In Sarntal it has been documented since the 16th century and has been preserved in an especially traditional form. 🎄

On the Thursday evenings of Advent, known as the Klöckelnächte (Klöckeln nights), masked men go from house to house and ask for gifts with noise and commotion. The origin is still debated: some researchers see pre-Christian fertility beliefs behind it, others a Christian origin.

  • Masked men with goat horns and plenty of noise
  • Singing: the Klöckellied and the thanksgiving song, both sung to an old melody
  • Two men dressed as a married couple, known as the Zussler

The food and drink stands of the Alpenadvent Christmas Market are also open on the Klöckeln nights, so you can refuel in between. 🔔
