The story that Nestroy tells in his comedy THE TALISMAN (1840) is about the power of prejudice and, at the same time, the foolishness of those who fall for it. For the witty Titus Feuerfuchs – shunned by society because of his red hair – life takes quite a turn, and the fun only begins when he happens, more or less by chance, to acquire a black wig, a talisman.
