Description

The Pulvermaar is the largest "Eye of the Eifel," the biggest maar lake. At the same time, it’s the steepest and deepest maar crater in the Eifel region. Inside it lies a lake with crystal-clear water that gathered there during the last Ice Age. It holds fish and plants, divers and a submarine. The Pulvermaar has been seen by Neanderthals & reindeer hunters, Celts & Romans, Franks & French. A witness to 20,000 years of history. A film was shot on its shores as if the volcano were erupting again: What is fact, what is fiction? What happened to the land when the volcano erupted? How did people back then experience these eruptions? What dangers might lie ahead? These and other questions can be explored on the guided walk. It starts on the Pulvermaar crater rim and leads a stretch along the lake’s edge (maximum length 3.5 km).
