Description

The opening of the exhibition “freihand. Script, School, Community” showcases fascinating contemporary calligraphy alongside class newspapers from 1926 – an exciting glimpse into about 100 years of student work from Berlin's Mitte district.

Sixteen students from an art elective at the Herbert-Hoover-Schule present their calligraphy created with pen and ink, decorated letters, and abstract forms where writing detaches from word meaning. At the same time, their newly designed community newspaper is part of the exhibition.

Special treasure: Twenty handwritten children’s newspapers from the 308th Community School at Leopoldplatz dating from 1926 to 1928 – personally written, illustrated, and designed by the students of a progressive experimental school of the Weimar Republic, which independently planned its lessons over four years.

Insights into history: Progressive education ended in 1933, school leaders were dismissed or interned, and the school library was burned. These circumstances make the surviving children’s newspapers valuable records of school history.

Admission is free – a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in calligraphy, school history, and community. ✍️
