Archäologische Freilichtanlage Funkenburg Westgreußen
Description
The Archäologische Freilichtanlage Funkenburg Westgreußen invites you to step into a Germanic warrior village with impressive defenses – including walls, palisades, a gate tower, and a watchtower that recreate the ancient tribal fortifications.
You can explore a large longhouse measuring about 12 m × 8 m, where tribal assemblies, court hearings, and ceremonies took place. There are also reconstructed pit houses showing everyday family life with space for 8 to 10 people – built from natural regional materials.
Especially fascinating are the traditional storage methods for grain and food in separate buildings, as well as an authentic sod roof that demonstrates old knowledge on water protection and thermal insulation.
Clay ovens that are actually used to bake bread, rolls, and cakes following old recipes add a practical and tasty touch to the experience.
Exciting programs are offered for children from 6 to 12 years old: creative workshops with soapstone, felting, and leatherwork, as well as a rally through the site, provide plenty of outdoor fun. Guided group tours with breakfast and traditional meals are available by appointment.
The Funkenburg was awarded the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize in recognition of its dedication to preserving and vividly presenting Germanic culture. A fantastic destination for anyone wanting to experience history come alive! 🌿
