Description

The Befreiungshalle Kelheim is an impressive circular building on Michelsberg. It commemorates the victorious battles against Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815 and stands as a symbol of German unity.

The architecture combines ancient and Christian central buildings and showcases the rivalry between the famous Bavarian classicists Friedrich von Gärtner and Leo von Klenze. The floor plan is an 18-sided polygon, crowned by 18 gigantic statues representing German tribal groups and recalling the day of the Battle of Nations near Leipzig, when Napoleon was defeated.

Inside, a circle of victory goddesses (“Viktorien”) by Ludwig von Schwanthaler impresses, along with an elaborately decorated dome ceiling in the 45-meter-high hall and a special acoustics that create a solemn atmosphere. A historic song composed for the laying of the cornerstone in 1842 was recorded anew for the 150th anniversary, honoring the fighters of the Wars of Liberation.

There is also a virtual 360-degree tour offering fantastic views from a special perspective – perfect for exploring together at home with the family.
