Burg Katzenstein
Description
Burg Katzenstein offers families a rewarding outing: one of the oldest surviving Staufer castles in a dramatic hilltop location with views over a side valley. 🏰
You can discover an impressive medieval ensemble of curtain wall, Palas and the distinctive Katzenturm. The tower dates from the 11th century, is about 30 m high, shows massive projecting stone blocks and has an original entrance 7 m above ground – that sparks the imagination.
The Romanesque chapel from the 13th century with frescoes between late Romanesque and early Gothic invites short art and history stops. The medieval-style tavern „Zum Marstall“ and the historic guest rooms also provide breaks during the circuit. As a UNESCO Geopark-Infopunkt the castle is also suitable for geological and regional explorers.
