Burg – Staatsgalerie in der Burg Burghausen
Description
The Staatsgalerie Burghausen displays a total of 56 paintings across two floors, with a special focus on late medieval altars from Bavarian monasteries and early 17th-century art from the Bavarian court.
On the second floor, you will find mainly altars by Gabriel Mälesskircher, a key figure in Bavarian painting in the late 15th century, renowned for vivid storytelling and depictions of saints' legends. The collection includes significant altars from monasteries such as Attel, Rottenbuch, Bernried, and the nearby Raitenhaslach.
Particularly spectacular are the enormous canvas paintings on the third floor, measuring up to ten meters wide, which depict important historical events from the 13th to the 15th centuries. These works were created by court artist Hans Werl in the early 17th century on commission from Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria. Among them are scenes like the Battle of Mühldorf in 1258, a key event connected to the founder of Burg Burghausen, Duke Heinrich XIII.
Additionally, copies of Albrecht Dürer's works enrich the exhibition on the third floor, offering fascinating insights into the work of the famous master from Nuremberg.
