Description

Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal is one of the oldest and most traditional zoos in Germany. The grounds are home to around 3,300 animals from around the world, including many endangered species. The zoo is beautifully integrated into the hilly landscape, featuring expansive lawns, ponds, and a historic collection of trees. In 2013, it became part of the European Garden Heritage Network (EGHN).

African lions and Siberian tigers have spacious outdoor areas that closely resemble their natural habitats. The Samba trail, a converted railway track, gives visitors a unique view into the tiger enclosure. The free-flight aviary Aralandia, opened in 2021, offers 1,000 square meters of space for its feathered residents, especially the endangered hyacinth, red-eared, and blue-throated macaws, allowing them to express their natural behaviors.

The zoo is actively involved in species conservation through ex-situ breeding programs and in-situ research. The latter supports international projects aimed at protecting biodiversity in their natural habitats. Guided tours and evening tours provide deeper insight into the animal world and the conservation efforts behind it. Additionally, Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal regularly hosts concerts and other events. The zoo is open year-round.
