Deutsches Feuerwehr-Museum Fulda
Description
The Deutsches Feuerwehr-Museum Fulda offers a fascinating journey through more than 170 years of firefighting technology – perfect for families and children who prefer experiencing history firsthand rather than just reading about it.
Across 1,600 square meters, authentic historic houses and facades invite you to dive into a visually impressive immersive environment. Large equipment is displayed in sunken pits surrounded by ground-level walkways, allowing children and wheelchair users to get a close view of the firefighting technology.
Special highlights include the oldest preserved mobile hand pump in the world from 1624, intricately decorated hand pumps from the Baroque and Neoclassical periods, the oldest known horse-drawn turntable ladder from 1808, a fully functional steam pump from 1903, and the world’s first electro-automotive turntable ladder from 1903.
Besides featuring large professional fire brigades, the museum also showcases small village fire departments, emphasizing family-friendliness and inclusion with a dedicated children’s area and a mobile fire truck seating cabin that children can climb into. From April to October, the museum offers exclusive behind-the-scenes depot tours for registered groups.
Education plays a key role: the museum provides a free quiz for students on firefighting history and fire safety, and offers museum-led thematic tours for school groups that vividly explain social and firefighting developments. The museum shop features toy fire trucks and engaging specialist literature – for kids and adults alike!
