Description

Eisriesenwelt is the largest ice cave in the world, formed millions of years ago by underground water currents and later shaped by ice. The guided tour takes you on about a one-kilometer walk through huge halls with impressive ice formations.

You should plan about three hours for the entire visit, including the walk to the cave, the cable car ride, and the tour. The cable car – the steepest in Austria – carries you up 500 meters in elevation, making the otherwise long climb much easier. From there, it’s still a 20-minute uphill walk to the cave entrance, with particularly beautiful panoramic views in good weather.

Inside the cave, you’ll encounter about 1,400 steps and temperatures around freezing point. Warm clothing and sturdy footwear are absolutely necessary. The pace of the tour adapts to the group, but the altitude difference corresponds to that of a 40-story building. The tour is not suitable for people with severe mobility limitations or cardiovascular problems.

Strollers are not recommended due to the many steps; a baby carrier is suitable for the little ones. Temperatures below 0 °C usually remain even in summer, so it’s best to dress warmly! ❄️

For children and youth up to 18 years old, this adventure is especially exciting but also a physical challenge.
