Description

The owl aviary in Šumava is considered the largest owl aviary of its kind in the country and brings the shy forest residents up close. 🦉 Most of the owls seen here are nocturnal birds with special abilities such as night vision and silent flight.

The theme is especially unusual, because the hidden lives of owls make them hard to observe in the wild. Here, by contrast, they can be watched closely.

  • The aviary hangs from a cable structure with a pyramid-shaped wooden frame and reaches a height of about 15 m.
  • The boreal owl (puštík bělavý) is the rarest owl in Šumava and a real highlight of the aviary.
  • Owls are rare and protected in the area, but an estimated 15 to 25 breeding pairs of boreal owls raise their young in Šumava.

The isolated Central European populations of this owl are remnants from the end of the last Ice Age, when the Šumava landscape was tundra-like.
