Description

The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz is an impressive 17th-century building that combines two significant sacred structures: the St. Catherine's Church and an adjacent oval burial chapel, which serves as a symbol of resurrection with special significance.

The unusually oval shape of the chapel is rare outside Italy, making the visit a unique experience filled with artistic and symbolic highlights for both young and old 🕊️. The architecture expresses strong dynastic and religious themes, seen in the crowns and emblems on the domes that reference the Habsburg dynasty and imperial power.

Inside the richly decorated St. Catherine’s Church, you’ll find Baroque stuccoes, frescoes celebrating the House of Habsburg, and sculptures representing Christian virtues. Families will find the historic frescoes depicting the liberation of Vienna from the Turks in 1683 especially fascinating – art and history come alive here.

During modern restorations, many original elements like the 17th-century wooden structures were carefully preserved, keeping the site’s authentic atmosphere intact. A special feature is the crafted “Holy Grave” from 1768/69, which offers further insight into religious art.

  • Architecture by artist Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, blending Italian and local styles

  • Seven-story round tower with impressive sandstone figures

  • Copper panels on the façade tell the story of Saint Catherine – a true storytelling experience
