Description

The mittelalterlichen Lochgefängnisse at the Nürnberger Loch offer you a fascinating glimpse into life and criminal justice in the Middle Ages. This prison is the oldest part of the town hall and is one of the largest surviving medieval city prisons.

You can explore the original cells, the torture chamber, the smithy, the prison kitchen, and the well room – everywhere you will feel the history and the dark atmosphere of times long past. Originally, there was a bakery here before the site was converted into a prison after 1332.

The prison mainly served as a detention facility for investigative detainees and partly for those sentenced to death. To make the medieval experience especially vivid for you, there are public tours every hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Especially exciting: Individual tours can be booked for groups, school classes, and families. There is also a video tour called “Haft im dunklen Keller” that takes you virtually through the medieval prison.
