Museum für Naturkunde Berlin
Description
The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is the largest natural history museum in Germany. Its collections include more than 30 million objects. Originally part of Humboldt University of Berlin, since January 1, 2009, it has been a public law foundation known as Museum für Naturkunde – Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science. It is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located on Invalidenstraße in the Oranienburger Vorstadt area of the Mitte district of Berlin. The natural history museum is accessible, among other ways, via a subway station of the same name.
Since January 1, 2009, due to its nationwide importance and the state's interest in its research work, the Museum für Naturkunde has been a member of the Leibniz Association. It sees itself as an integrated research museum aiming through its citizen science activities and the digital accessibility of its collection to become an "open integrated research museum" that fulfills the triad of collecting, researching, and communicating, serving as a bridge between science and society.
In English-speaking regions, the short name Humboldt Museum is also used, but this is misleading since there is also a Humboldt Museum located in Tegel Palace in Berlin, dedicated to the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt.
