Nationalpark Neusiedler See-Seewinkel
Description
The Nationalpark Neusiedler See-Seewinkel awaits you with a diverse world of animals and plants. Some 320 bird species have been recorded here, and about 120 of them breed in the region. The nests of the white storks, perched on village rooftops, are visible from afar.
In autumn and winter, the sky above the area comes especially alive. During the so-called Gänsestrich, bean geese, greater white-fronted geese, and greylag geese arrive and depart again – one of the most impressive natural spectacles of the year.
Between the pastures lie salt lagoons that dry out periodically and provide important habitats for birds and amphibians.
- European ground squirrels, one of the most conspicuous mammals in the region
- Hungarian steppe cattle and white donkeys, which are being bred again on the Seewinkel pastures
- More than 40 dragonfly species
- Golden jackals, which were recorded again in 2007 after disappearing from the area in the early 20th century
- Pannonien-Salzaster, which blooms in autumn on the salty soils of the Seewinkel
