Description
Schloss Droyßig originated as a medieval fortress built in the early 13th century to secure an important crossroads. The castle church still contains elements dating back to this time. After changing ownership several times, it was acquired by the von Hoym family, who in the early 17th century transformed the fortress into a residential castle.
In the early 13th century, the impressive castle was constructed by crusaders from the East who brought their castle-building expertise. Today, this unique structure in Germany remains almost completely preserved. Surrounded by a moat, a circular double ring of walls rose, punctuated at regular intervals by six tall, narrow, and elongated semicircular towers projecting far outward, while a round keep stood prominently in the center, offering expansive views.
The castle houses a restaurant serving regional specialties.
Brown bear keeping has been a tradition in Droyßig since 1870. Visit the bears Aiko and Toni within the castle complex.
