Stille Nacht Museum Hallein
Description
At the Stille Nacht Museum Hallein, you experience the story behind the Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!”. The museum is housed in the former sacristan and choir residence where Franz Xaver Gruber lived and worked for 28 years – an authentic place full of history.
The museum tells the story of how the world-famous song was created and spread, and also showcases the life of the Gruber family. It becomes especially exciting in the interactive family room with play and fun:
-
Shadow theater, treasure hunts, and a Gruber game invite you to explore the 19th century in a playful way.
-
Family programs, musical events, and storytelling tours offer shared experiences around the composer Franz Xaver Gruber.
The museum is accessible and offers inclusive programs: guided tours in sign language, tactile stations for the visually impaired, and texts in easy language.
During Advent, a special family program with atmospheric stories and guided tours creates a festive mood.
There is also a virtual 3D tour through Gruber’s former home featuring original documents, furniture, and exhibit items such as Joseph Mohr’s guitar. As a traditional finale, on December 24th the song “Silent Night! Holy Night!” is sung together at Gruber’s grave with the Halleiner Liedertafel Choir, founded by Gruber’s sons.
