The Votivkirche is a distinctive neo-Gothic church with two prominent towers – an impressive Vienna landmark. Construction began in 1856 as a sign of gratitude after the failed assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph; 23 years later the church was inaugurated for the Silver Wedding of the imperial couple.
In the Museum of the Votivkirche a new permanent exhibition (opened October 14, 2021) features neo-Gothic and Gothic masterworks in the elevated oratory with a view of the nave and the high altar. Among the treasures are liturgical vessels, lavish banners, design drawings, as well as the special Antwerp Passion Altarpiece (c. 1500). The conservation and restoration were carried out by the Institute for Conservation and Restoration of the University of the Arts Vienna; central works by the brothers Karl and Franz Jobst, as well as original plans and the original model of the church’s construction, are on display. The exhibition was curated by Dr. Arthur Saliger (Austrian Belvedere Gallery).
The Votivkirche lies in a quiet park, the Votivpark. There is a small playground with a water play area there, especially popular in summer 💦. Opposite, the Sigmund-Freud-Park invites for a picnic. Guided tours are available on request for schools and other groups. Suitable for children and teenagers: 2–6, 6–10, 10–12 and from 12 years old. 👨👩👧
