Between the longhouse and the smithy: The Wikingerzeitliche Hofanlage Valsgaard near Wallsbüll offers exciting insights into Viking life – with events, crafts, and period costumes.

What was Viking life really like?

At the Viking Age farmstead Valsgaard near Wallsbüll, you get a vivid answer. Based on archaeological finds from between 700 and 1100 AD, the Valsgaard e. V. association has built an authentic early medieval farmstead. Here you can explore faithfully reconstructed houses, workshops, cooking areas, and gardens – and on weekends, even for free. It’s especially impressive when volunteers dressed in historic costumes bring the site to life. Whether during tours, activity days, or annual highlights, you dive right into everyday Viking life. For school groups and others, Valsgaard e. V. also offers special tours and events by arrangement, though the offerings are currently limited to a few dates each year due to the volunteer structure. A real highlight are the three big events throughout the year: At Pentecost, "Open Thor" invites you to a day when the association presents itself, showcases old crafts, hosts games, and offers grilled food and drinks. In August, the large Viking market with the "Battle of Wallsbüll" follows, where numerous reenactors from the early medieval scene gather. Here you can experience crafts, trade, and impressive combat demonstrations – including a spectacular battle and a battle staged especially for children to join in. Towards the end of the year, in cooperation with Nordmarsch, the "Valsgaard March" is organized. Around 500 participants march distances of up to 53 kilometers – an impressive spectacle that usually takes place the first weekend of October. However, the event must be canceled in 2025. An exciting destination for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a trip back to the early Middle Ages.
