Zitadelle Mainz
Description
Zitadelle Mainz is a 17. century fortress (built around 1660) – an exciting place where your children can imagine life in a fortress. 🏰
In a compact area the site condenses the history of Mainz: from the Roman Drususstein through baroque barracks to the air-raid shelters converted in the bastions from the Second World War.
You discover on site the Stadthistorische Museum (building D) and the southern Zitadellengraben – a protected, man-made biotope of national importance. 🌿
Since 1975 the OpenOhr-Festival has taken place at Pentecost – with workshops, discussions, cabaret and concerts for young people and families. In 2015 Zitadelle Mainz received the Haager Plakette as protected cultural property.
