Family Tour on the Auerochsenweg

Description
What are ancient cattle (Auerochsen) doing in the Palatinate Forest?
Discover the fascinating connection between nature and wildlife on a guided tour through the Auerochsen enclosure in the St. Martin valley. Learn exciting facts about the flora and fauna shaped by the aurochs.
Initiated by Peter Hiery in 2011, a 44-hectare grazing area was created to provide a home for a herd of Heck cattle. These wild cattle actively shape the landscape: over time, the more than 100-year-old pine forest will gradually become a bright, semi-open mosaic landscape.
Around the area, the 4.6 km long Auerochsenweg was established, inviting you to hikes and nature experiences. During the guided tour, you will cover about 1 km on unpaved paths.
Note: Please wear sturdy footwear. Dogs are not allowed inside the enclosure.
Dive into a unique natural world – we look forward to your visit!
