The Special Sunday Series: Meerfelder Maar

Description
The Meerfelder Maar is the largest maar in the Western Eifel, but only part of it is filled with water. The village of Meerfeld lies within the maar crater. The Meerfelder Maar holds special significance in climate research. Over thousands of years, the maar lake has been filled with sediment layers several meters thick. Core samples from these sediments have provided important insights into climate history. In 2008, the International Union of Geological Sciences designated the Meerfelder Maar as a regional type locality for defining the geological Pleistocene/Holocene boundary.
