Description

Windsborn is the only crater lake north of the Alps that is permanently filled with water. Unlike the maars, it is not a hollow blasted into the original terrain but the eruption crater of a volcanic mountain. This Windsborn scoria cone is part of the Mosenberg volcanic group. Around the lake, you can clearly see the scoria deposits that make up the mountain. The lake, with its wetland zone, is a unique habitat for rare plants and insects. Under suitable weather conditions, you can observe many dragonflies and butterflies.
