Description

Altes Schloss Schleißheim is a historic palace originally built in 1598 as a manor house by Duke Wilhelm V. Starting in 1617, it was redesigned under Maximilian I in the style of Italian villas, which characterizes its unique architecture.

The interior impresses with stucco work and frescoes inspired by Peter Candid from the Netherlands. After severe damage in World War II, reconstruction began in 1970 with a new purpose: today the palace houses a museum of modern religious folk art from around the world, based on the collection of Gertrud Weinhold.

Visitors can explore the original vaulted cellars and gain fascinating insights into the remains of older castle sections as well as the extensive renovations. The palace grounds include spacious courtyards surrounded by historically important residential and farm buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
