Description

The Antoniter- und Strigel-Museum im Antonierhaus is located in a historic four-wing complex from the late 15th century, considered the oldest preserved institution of the Memmingen Antonites in Europe.

At the Antoniter Museum, you can explore the history of the Antonite hospital order, which specialized in treating the disease known as “ergotism.” The exhibition links medieval medical conditions with religious healing methods.

As you walk through the original rooms and corridors, where patients and order members lived and worked over 500 years ago, you’ll gain fascinating insights into the daily life of a medieval hospital. Intriguing details include faith-based healing, the special “St. Anthony’s wine,” and amputations as part of the treatment.

The museum also combines art and culture: it presents works by Bernhard Strigel, one of Memmingen’s most famous artists, connecting art history with local culture and the hospital’s history.
