Description

Bergwerkmuseum Rossgang takes you on a journey into the world of mining! Here, you can discover one of the few original Rossgang houses preserved, where brown coal was once extracted from 28 meters deep using horse power.

The museum powerfully showcases the coal mining technology: a central winding shaft, around which two horses walked in circles, winding and unwinding the hoist cable. There is also a permanent exhibition on the history of mining in Kaufungen, focusing on brown coal, local mines, and the lives of the miners.

Outside, a model of a pre-industrial alum production demonstrates how historic alum crystals were made in Oberkaufungen, which were used in dyeing, tanning, papermaking, and medicine.

A special highlight is the Rossgang Festival in April – here you can enjoy music, delicious food, and exciting hands-on activities around mining for the whole family. 🎶
