Description
Bildungsstätte Innerdeutsche Grenze (BIG) takes you on an exciting journey through the history of the inner-German border and the Cold War. The multimedia permanent exhibition features, among other things, a bronze relief model of the border, a small cinema with short films, and thematic islands with texts, images, exhibits, and audio stations with eyewitness accounts.
The outdoor area displays authentic relics such as a piece of the Berlin Wall and a border gate. From there, you can explore original historical sites with special borderland tours that include audio commentary, letting you experience firsthand what life was like at the former border.
The educational center especially targets teenagers around 14 years old and offers exciting insights through seminars on topics like the reasons for Germany’s division, life in the GDR border region, and the impact on the Neustadt area. This is complemented by a learning camp that motivates young people to engage with the past and future.
The nearby scout house in Fornbach is ideal for groups doing active holiday projects – it includes campfire sites, tent pitches, and an ecological garden. Exciting hiking trails, memorial sites, and a borderland app complete the exploration program.
This special place is free for everyone interested in history and eager to experience the German division in a playful way. 📚
