Description

Burg Rötteln is one of the most powerful castle ruins in southwestern Germany and the third-largest castle complex in Baden. The excellently preserved ruins offer families the chance to explore an impressive historic landmark while gaining fascinating insights into medieval architecture and fortification techniques.

Perched high on a 417-meter hill spur, Burg Rötteln impresses with its unique bergfried, which is rotated about 45° relative to the castle’s main axis – an architectural highlight. The castle ruins tell a rich story, including serving as the residence of the Margraves of Sausenberg and Baden-Durlach, and provide child-friendly information about medieval life and local noble families.

The turbulent history of the castle, involving events like the Thirty Years' War and the Dutch War, makes it all the more captivating. These historical backgrounds let families experience the fortress’s resilience and strategic importance. As a key attraction in Lörrach and the surrounding area, Burg Rötteln invites both young and old to explore.
