Description

DenkOrt Deportationen 1941-1944 is a powerful memorial located right in front of the Würzburg main train station. It honors the Jewish victims from Würzburg and Lower Franconia who were deported between 1941 and 1944 – a chapter of German history that found its tragic significance at two former station sites.

Visitors can explore online the names, lives, and cultural backgrounds of all deported individuals, uncovering personal stories. A specially designed educational project connects the past with today’s social issues – offering a particularly engaging and educational experience for young people.

An audio guide created by students provides a concise introduction in just about 23 minutes, making the visit even more accessible. Part of the DenkOrt is the Path of Remembrance featuring visible stations marked by thresholds, stelae, and QR codes that offer insights from the victims’ perspectives via a web app.

The project has received several awards, including the Bavarian Culture Prize 2021, the Würzburg City Cultural Medal, and a special award at the Würzburg Architecture Prize – a testament to its unique importance and impact.

Anyone interested in engaging with history and keeping memory alive will find here comprehensive and compelling insights that encourage reflection.
