Description

The Deutsches Knopfmuseum showcases a fascinating collection of buttons spanning four centuries, made from 26 different materials. Especially intriguing are the detailed insights into the processing of mother-of-pearl, highlighting the craftsmanship involved.

The exhibition also features the machines and diverse manufacturing techniques of the button industry, which require great skill. Starting from about 6,000 buttons, the collection has grown to around 2.5 million pieces, offering an impressive variety.

A special highlight is the garment “The Legendary Button Companion Outfit” with over 18,000 buttons. The museum also tells the story of local button production in Bärnau, founded in 1895, recognizing the significant role women played as home workers, factory employees, and even owners.

Since 1985, annual special events dedicated to specific button materials have been held. The museum is part of the museum network das zwoelfer, linking the past with the regional museum diversity.
