Die Northeimer Wallanlagen

Description
During a pleasant walk through Die Northeimer Wallanlagen, you will find 30 marked trees distinguished by their size, history, or rarity. The circular route takes about one and a half to two hours.
Die Northeimer Wallanlagen are the remains of an extensive fortification that began with the construction of the city wall in 1252. It was completed in 1305, stood nine meters high, and stretched 1,750 meters, of which about 950 meters still remain.
After firearms were first used in the 14th century, the city was further secured by an earthwork constructed from 1431 to 1491. It consisted of two wide ditches surrounding the city wall, with an eight-meter-high and thirty-meter-wide rampart in between that served as a bullet catcher.
Thanks to its massive defensive structures, the city of Northeim repelled imperial troops three times during the Thirty Years’ War. The third siege began in September 1626 and ended on June 26, 1627 with the city’s surrender.
