Entrische Kirche
Description
The Entrische Kirche is considered the largest natural cave in the Salzburg Central Alps and is one of the most important caves on the edge of the Hohe Tauern. It has been open to visitors as a show cave since 1962. The name is first documented in 1428 and roughly means “uncanny church,” since “entrisch” is a Bavarian-Austrian word for uncanny.
The cave also holds a hidden history: during the Counter-Reformation, Protestants met here secretly for services and gatherings.
Inside, you can expect, among other things:
- Over 2.500 meters of show cave with large chambers
- Impressive stalactites and sinter formations
For centuries, the cave has served several bat species as a winter roost. It is protected as an EU habitat, including for greater mouse-eared bats, lesser horseshoe bats, and barbastelles 🦇.
