Description

The Glörtalsperre, a structure built in 1903/1904 originally to supply water to the industry in the Volmetal region and historically significant as part of the Route of Industrial Heritage, now serves as an integral part of the local natural and recreational landscape. Its dam, a curved gravity dam made of rubble masonry, stands out as a distinctive architectural feature.

On the north shore, there is a designated swimming area that allows for recreational use of the water. DLRG lifeguards are on duty on weekends from May to August. A playground and fitness equipment complement the outdoor activity options.

A roughly 3.4-kilometer circular trail surrounds the reservoir. Certified in 2021 as a premium walking trail, it is mostly flat and wheelchair accessible. Informational signs along the path provide insights into the local flora and fauna. Forest sofas and benches with views of the water offer places to relax.

The youth hostel located on the northwest shore, established in 1929 and certified by ADFC Bett+Bike, is available for group stays. Near the dam, the Haus Glörtal offers dining options with an outdoor area. An additional kiosk nearby expands the food offerings. About two kilometers away is the Glörfeld campground. The reservoir is also a stop on the “Nature / Culture Hiking Tour,” which starts at the Rotthausen hiking parking lot.
