Garten der Frauen
Description
The Garten der Frauen is a memorial established by the Garten der Frauen e. V. association that opened in summer 2001. It is located in Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg and honors women who have played a significant role in Hamburg's history. The site covers about 1,700 square meters northeast of the Ohlsdorf water tower and was opened in July 2001. It contains 618 graves spread across eleven communal burial plots. The Garten der Frauen features 98 historic tombstones. The remembrance spiral made up of many sandstone pieces displays 65 names, and a memorial column, installed in November 2021, currently bears six names. The idea for the Garten der Frauen came from historian Rita Bake, who founded it with the help of Helga Diercks-Norden and Silke Urbanski. The area is maintained, designed, funded, and managed by the Garten der Frauen association, founded in 2000 on the initiative of the three women. On July 5, 2026, a celebration took place in the garden. A film made during this event is available online:
