Description

Das Heimat- und Schulmuseum Himmelpforten displays local and regional history in a historic school building with two floors and outdoor areas.

The most exciting feature is the interactive old classroom, where children can experience what school was like about 120 years ago – including writing on slate boards and reenacting historical lessons.

This classroom and the traditional teaching methods are especially popular with elementary and secondary school students from across the entire district. There is also a hands-on butter-making activity, guided by an experienced instructor, which is perfect for birthday parties and school groups 🧈.

The museum covers many topics: from regional history and household skills with tried-and-true techniques like spinning, weaving, cooking, baking, washing, and ironing to agriculture, school history, and traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, carpentry, clog making, saddlery, cooperage, and wagon building.

As a participatory museum, it invites everyone to touch the exhibits and bring the past to life. A film team created educational materials that teachers use, highlighting its educational significance.
