Heimkehle
Description
Heimkehle is a natural gypsum cavern called the Kleiner Dom, which was used as a forced labor camp for concentration camp prisoners during World War II. Under inhumane conditions, airplane parts were manufactured there.
The memorial area features an artistically significant tile mural by Wilhelm Schmied from 1974, depicting two prisoners in inmate clothing with barbed wire, honoring political prisoners and victims of the Nazi dictatorship.
As a protected cultural monument, Heimkehle commemorates the resistance and victims of Nazi rule and serves as a warning to the living.
Original concrete structures from the underground workshops – including floors and walls – have been preserved despite the later demolition.
