Description

The Historisches Museum in Regensburg offers fascinating insights into the archaeology, history, art, and culture of the East Bavaria region from the Stone Age to the 20th century.

One of the most impressive features is one of Germany's largest and most important Roman provincial collections with numerous exhibits, including a 100,000-year-old hand axe from Pösing, Celtic finds, and Roman artifacts. A reconstruction of a Roman house with a hypocaust stove brings the life of that time to life.

The museum also displays medieval Christian art, tapestries, as well as works by the Regensburg Renaissance artist Albrecht Altdorfer and the Danube School. A cloister with a late Gothic monastery well and Gothic rooms with significant sculptures invite exploration.

An archaeological outpost, the Roman Brewery, showcases well-preserved remains of a brewing facility dating to around 200 AD under a transparent pavilion.

Additionally, the municipal gallery “Leerer Beutel” presents modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries from Regensburg and East Bavaria.
