Kanalmuseum Atrium, Brunsbüttel
Description
The information center of the Waterways and Shipping Office in Brunsbüttel for the Kiel Canal.
Right next to the "New Locks," completed in 1914, on the north side of the Kiel Canal stands ATRIUM, the museum at the lock. Through display panels, ship models, landscape and functional models, technical objects, videos, and historical exhibits, the exhibition presents the construction, operation, and significance of the world's busiest artificial waterway. For hosts in Dithmarschen who want to give their visitors a special treat, a trip to the locks and the museum at the lock complex, the Atrium, is simply a must. After an exciting tour through the history of the former Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, opened in 1895, visitors climb a few flights of stairs to the lock deck. With a bit of luck, visitors find themselves eye-to-eye with one of the captains steering their dream ships to the Caribbean. Such wonderful encounters can also be planned in advance since the passage times of the large dream ships are scheduled weeks ahead.
