Landschaftspark Herzberge
Description
The entire former area around the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Königin Elisabeth Herzberge (KEH) has been known as Landschaftspark Herzberge since 2010. It is located in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg. Until 2007, the area was still a mix of fallow land, commercial, residential, and green spaces without coordinated development and with various problems. Starting in 2004, the Agrarbörse Deutschland Ost e. V. together with the Lichtenberg district office initiated a series of funded projects aimed at careful, nature-oriented development of the area into a model of urban agriculture in Berlin. Over several phases in subsequent years, the different areas were combined and transformed into agricultural land, connected biotopes, pathways, and recreational spaces. The main construction work was essentially completed by 2013. The agricultural use involves extensive grazing of the land with Pomeranian coarsewool sheep, which goes hand in hand with preserving and developing a species-rich and valuable protected landscape area in the district. The designation of Landschaftspark Herzberge as a protected landscape area was approved by the Berlin Senate in spring 2019.
