Leineweberdenkmal
Description
The Leineweberdenkmal is one of the most important sights in Bielefeld and features a three-meter-tall bronze figure of a linen weaver. This statue symbolizes the significant role linen weavers played in the city’s economic development in the early 20th century.
The statue depicts a linen weaver carrying handwoven linen fabrics in a quiver on his back – a lively connection to the historic textile craft that shaped Bielefeld. 🌿
The monument was erected for the 300th anniversary of the County of Ravensberg and was unveiled on July 16, 1909. The real linen weaver Jobst Heinrich Heienbrok served as the model; he traveled from Jöllenbeck to Sparrenburg over three months to help create an accurate depiction.
The story of the monument is fascinating: a failed attempt by the sculptor even led to a student getting injured – a human anecdote behind its creation. After being stored temporarily during wartime changes, the bronze figure was reinstalled at its current location in 1960, showing the strong community commitment of the citizens.
The surrounding fountain, designed by Wilhelm Heiner, is also especially worth seeing, giving the monument a pleasant water ambiance alongside its historical significance. A rewarding destination for families wanting to experience history with life and nature. 💧
