Description

The Museum ehemalige Klöppelschule preserves the history of the royal bobbin lace school, founded in Tiefenbach in 1907. There, women and girls learned the artful craft of bobbin lace-making as an additional source of income.

On display are original designs, pattern drawings, bobbin letters, and works from Tiefenbach that vividly illustrate the development and significance of this home industry. Bobbin lace-making in the Upper Palatinate Forest region – including Tiefenbach, Schönsee, and Stadlern – was added to the Bavarian and German lists of intangible cultural heritage in 2016.

During the peak years from 1900 to 1930, bobbin lace from Tiefenbach gained worldwide recognition: with exhibits at international fairs and a gold medal at the World Expo in Barcelona, this craft demonstrated the highest level of skill. Today, the museum is housed in the former school building, which now serves as the town hall – making the cultural and historical importance of the tradition and the building tangible.

Highlights include a specially designed commemorative postage stamp honoring bobbin lace-making and exchanges with international bobbin lace artists, such as those from the Czech Republic. This keeps the tradition alive, further passed down to younger generations by dedicated experts.
