Natureum Niederelbe

Description
Discover the fascinating animal and plant life of the Elbe estuary. Look beyond the horizon and uncover the secrets of nature. Natureum Niederelbe, located on a peninsula right at the Elbe and Oste rivers, is nestled in diverse coastal landscapes. Take a peek inside a real beehive, trigger a storm surge at the ebb and flood model, or listen to the concert of bird calls. From the birdwatching stations in the ElbeKüstenpark, you can gaze over vast mudflats and meadows and see the "musicians" of the coastal concert live. In spring and fall, thousands of migratory birds take advantage of the rich food supply to refuel for their long journeys – a unique natural spectacle.
You can get even closer to the animals in ElbeKüstenpark, which includes endangered domestic and farm animal breeds such as the mighty Schleswig cold-blooded horses, the small and agile Skudde sheep, and the lively Vorwerk chickens. Many other animals – ferrets, turtles, dwarf otters, and rabbits – also live on the park grounds and some can even be petted.
Old fruit tree varieties and herb beds line the paths through marsh, moor, and geest landscapes. The youngest visitors will enjoy the water play area and playground.
The museum building focuses on the "lifeline Elbe River," which forms a "bridge between worlds" – nature and economy. Learn about the region's importance for marine mammals, migratory fish, and migratory birds, as well as the conflicts arising from the river’s use as a waterway. Closely linked are the topics of storm surges, coastal protection, consumption, and sustainability.
In the exhibition "Amber – Gold of the Coast," you will learn all about the formation, origin, and processing of this fascinating material. On display are magnificent jewelry pieces, intricate carvings, and rare inclusions.
Natureum Niederelbe regularly hosts major special exhibitions on various topics as well as art and photo exhibitions in the "Gallery in the Tower." The café/bistro offers homemade cakes and tortes, snacks, and hot dishes made from seasonal and regional ingredients. In the shop with a small reading corner, you will find books and products connected to the exhibitions, produced sustainably.
