Description

Park Babelsberg is a roughly 124-hectare green space located in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam. The park, along with Neuer Garten and Park Sanssouci, is part of the Berlin-Potsdam palace park ensemble. It was designed around Babelsberg Palace, the former summer residence of Emperor Wilhelm I and his wife Augusta. The hilly terrain sloping down to the lake was landscaped starting in 1833 by garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné, and from 1842/1843 by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. The grounds border the Tiefen See of the Havel and Glienicker See. On September 22, 1862, Wilhelm I held a meeting with Otto von Bismarck in the park. As a result of that conversation, Bismarck was appointed Prussian Minister President. Since 1990, the park has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
