Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn-Museum
Description
The Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn-Museum invites you on a fascinating journey through the history of precision instruments. It is housed in the former Johanneskirche, a Romanesque building dating back to around 940, which was saved from demolition and lovingly restored thanks to dedicated local citizens.
Particularly impressive are the traces of an original Black Sun painting in the old altar area, symbolizing the darkening of the sun at Jesus’ death and referring to a crucifixion scene with John and Mary.
The museum is closely linked to the local history of astronomical clockmaking and honors Philipp Matthäus Hahn, who built his first important astronomical clocks in Onstmettingen. The exhibit offers exciting insights into the origins and development of the region’s scale industry.
In addition, the attached collection in the former Riedschule displays over 600 scales from about 50 manufacturers – including precision scales and measuring devices from official calibration authorities.
A visit is well worth it for anyone passionate about the history of technology and the roots of local industry. ⚖️
