Römervilla Blankenheim

Description
Römervilla Blankenheim is one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in the Rhineland. The area features a spacious Villa Rustica estate with a magnificent main building, stables, barns, carriage houses, and servants' quarters arranged around a large farmyard.
The roughly three-hectare estate was continuously operated from the late 1st century to the mid-4th century AD.
The main building impresses with its wide colonnade, giving the residence a monumental appearance – visible even from a distance.
This only known axial villa in the Rhineland is also distinguished by six symmetrically placed outbuildings along the edge of the courtyard.
The villa owner’s wealth likely came in part from side businesses such as exploiting nearby quarries and ore deposits.
The ruins of the villa were first excavated archaeologically in 1894, with further excavations continuing until 1931. The walls of the main building are particularly well preserved and are now open to the public.
