Description

🖼️

The collection focuses on 19th-century German artists who work beyond realism, portraying historical, mythological, and literary themes from Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Greece, and Spain. This way, the exhibition reflects the collector’s diverse travels and cultural interests.

Highlights include works by Moritz von Schwind, Arnold Böcklin, Anselm Feuerbach, and Hans von Marées, as well as a rare selection of copies of Venetian masterpieces, some created by Franz von Lenbach.

The displayed artworks serve as projections of hopes and wishes from different eras – from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance – inviting wonder and immersion in past worlds. The collection has been open since 1865 and has retained its historic charm.
