Schifffahrtsarchiv Rendsburg
Description
The Rendsburger Schifffahrtsarchiv is a private foundation established by the Rendsburg shipowner Dr. Jens-Peter Schlüter, allowing the public to explore the diversity of Rendsburg shipping as well as its past and present.
The archive/museum covers 550 square meters and presents a comprehensive view of shipping since the 1940s, offering an interesting insight into an important part of the city's history. Particularly notable is Rendsburg’s location on an Eider island, which early on encouraged residents to use the river as a transportation route. The Schifffahrtsarchiv Rendsburg is a museum documenting the history of inland shipping in northern Germany. The ground floor showcases the beginnings of the Rendsburg shipping companies; the first floor is largely dedicated to the development of the Karl Schlüter shipping company. The models of modern container ships stand out here. In the attic, visitors experience the atmosphere of an old shipyard. The exhibits come from Nübbel, which in the penultimate century was home to at least five shipyards. The Schifffahrtsarchiv also offers the opportunity to host private events for up to 30 people in the conference room on the first floor.
