Schloss Kobersdorf
Description
Schloss Kobersdorf has a turbulent past. The complex is believed to go back to a medieval fortification, whose origins may reach as far as the time of Louis the German. Later, the castle served as a bandit headquarters and as a workshop for counterfeit money, which turns the tour into a real detective story.
Here you can discover, above all, the following:
The chapel with 48 individual angels floating freely in the room
The Knights' Hall with frescoes by the Italian painter Carpoforo Tencalla, whose room was almost completely reconstructed and finished in 2001
A coat of arms in the chapel frescoes, the oldest surviving depiction of the later Burgenland state coat of arms
The moat and the barbican (an outer defensive work), which are easy to see from the northeast view
Since 1972, the Schlossspiele Kobersdorf festival of performances has aimed to make the castle a cultural center.
